JUAB COUNTY MAY BE DRY, BUT WE GOT WATER AND GRUB

Utah is the second driest state in the union, but little do tourists know that our west desert has a lot of water, ya just have to find it. We will give you a hint, then it will be up to the traveler to find it. One can start at Simpson Springs, one of the main stations of the Pony Express that ran from St. Joe, Missouri to Sacramento, California. Pony riders salary was about $125 a month and they always looked for Orphans to gallop the 60 to 120 miles between stations. The rider could take a breather at Fish Springs, a beautiful site we like to keep secret. The BLM has control of most of the western portions of Juab, Tooele and Millard Counties, but they are there to help lost souls that forget to take a spare tire, map or enough water. Other photos are of Crystal Ball Cave; Bates Family Farm and Gandy Warm Springs. Those of us that grew up round these parts like the sagebrush and rabbit brush, but also the refreshing and clean waterfalls and grassy hide a ways. Please keep it that way and grab your grub in Nephi or Nortonville Merc, which ever suits your fancy!

WHO GOT MARRIED IN 1885; IN 1964 AND DO WE DO THAT ANYMORE?

No, get paid to advertiseThe Times News, but found that it gives more accurate reports of what is going on even those that are decades old. The first photo is of The Times News from 1935, and think that paper was saved, as it chatted about the Golden Wedding Annivesary of my grandparents. They passed away before my birth, but appreicate being named after Will Jones. Now that I look at the fat old guy in the mirror, we must be related, as both had a mustache before puberty; reseding hair line and gave our money away to those we thought were in need, but cheated ourselves. Will Jones died without a penny living with daughter Erma Garrett. We then put photo information from 1964, as back then one could tell it was Mrs. Roy Gibson that wrote about the wedding, as she was very descriptive. From the same paper, we had Megan Garrett of Livingston do a collage of ads from back then. I don't know what happened to my spell checker, but the IGA store(where Chris Memmott now is) had an ad about hens for sale at .37 cents a pound and I never knew they had hens with 3 breasts! Is it too late to ask for one now and two for the road? Read, drink and chuckle, for soon we will all be goners.

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN IN LOVE....ALONE? MANY PARENTS KNOW THAT FEELING.

Have you ever been in love alone? If you are human, most of us have been at one time or another. To many of us that have suffered physical or emotional abuse, the alone factor may be the roughest to overcome. I thought of this the other day when I was speaking to an "older gal". I consider them older only if they are older that I am, which is close to ancient. She told me she ran away from home as a young teenager as she grew tired of the physical, emotional and mental stress of watching her step-father abuse her mother, whom she loved, but loved herself more when he came after her. She turned out well, being taken in by an older couple who cared for her; lied about her age, and truly gave her a chance in life. She has never looked up her original family, and doesn't want to. She made in through life with her own grit and determination, of which she stands tall. I recall that, along with my own mother who didn't like Mothers Day. I came to appreciate that when I found that "Mothers Day" should only be for her own mother, for which she loved and gave the attached crayon note to her mother about a hundred years ago. In reflection, I thought of some of the people all around us that are in love....and do that alone. The other person doesn't know or care to acknowledge it or they have passed. That is the sad feature of today's story of life. A few years ago, I had a dream about a gal I was in love with....alone! She was a bar maid in a western town in Montana. I got in my vehicle and headed for Montana in search of this woman I was in love with, but she lived 150 years ago, so I hadn't met her. I didn't find her, but directed to a woman by the name of Anne Seagraves, who I  became acquainted with. She acted like I wasn't the first dusty cowboy to look for their own "Soiled Dove" of yesteryear. I was smitten by her knowledge and purchased each of her western history books. She knew well my love of that gal with the seamy side of life who came west in the late 1800's to find fortune, but settled for poverty and pain. My love of life was caught in a web over which she had no control. All in all, I found that being "In Love Alone" was not all that bad. As a kid, I accepted the proposition that clean clothes magically appeared in my closet for school, and food mystically found itself on the table. After sitting by the open fire to keep us warm, we scuffled off to bed, never thinking it was our mother that made the fire in the kitchen; cooked and worked a full day. Later in life, I found that love in marriage can be great, but often we jump in to it and later find the beautiful dream is over, but then leap again. However, the love of a mother for her kid....never ends....it lasts forever, as does the search for the "soiled love" for me. First two photos are of "Little Sure Shot" Annie Oakley, then my mothers note to her mother of a century ago.

WITH SOME PARENTAL HELP, KIDS COME UP WITH FUN WITHOUT GIZMOS

It is a little difficult to believe, but in my days as a kid, we found joy in hiking to the glory holes(where gypsum was mined north east of J Hill) to be scared out of our wits by owls and bats; sail hand carved boats down the irrigation ditches; used socks as gloves to deliver papers and to play baseball with a 2 x 4, with a rock as a baseball. One of the best events that required adult supervision, along with State Road and City leaders, was to release carp in front of the ole Nephi/Juab High, that is now the County Complex, and give prizes to whoever caught the carp that was trapped there when the drains were plugged. All ages played and still remember it was a fun time and a lot of luck. I have ate carp before, and hope we didn't back then. Later on, I found that people in China used that as their staple food. I am old and don't know how to make this 1964 Times News scan bigger. Sorry, but no grandkids to do it for me.

IF YOU ARE DECENT, WE WELCOME YOU TO NEPHI, UTAH

Nephi has always advertised itself as a Friendly City At The Crossroads Of The West. We are not sure we are as much, only because some of our own are said to be turning to the no-accounts that is arriving or becoming like that-out of greed, but we are going to keep trying to assist our rural area and good work ethics. Todays photo entries are mostly of the past, which will give some description of things and people. The brochure is outdated, such as the cover page. Mt. Nebo; Ute Stampede and Anderson Funeral Home will remain after you and I have swallowed our horse bits! Andersons is now in their 6th generation and I recently was greeted at a funeral by young Miles Anderson Jr. Prior to when it was Nebo Auto, the land belonged to Wm. Jones. Steve Greenwood became the owner, now it belongs to the White Boys. Mt. Nebo is forever and all Americans forever and ever. Other photos are of Roy Tolley with our forgotten Elk; Big Horn Sheep and Deer, before people killed off their winter habitat. There is an owl in a tree and Chris White practicing at a place we call "Canyon Hills Raceway"; Fish Springs in West Juab County; Juab Abandoned Mine Dump in Spor Mts, and then for a little extra, we plugged in a photo from the National Park Service, with "Ehp Hanks Tower" near the entrance to Capitol Gorge, named for Ephraim Hanks, an ex-bodyguard of Brigham Young, who settled on nearby Pleasant Creek. Hanks sheltered Mormon polygamists during the 1880s when United States Marshalls wanted to catch and arrest Mormon Leaders and at times some believe we are still being "hunted" by Anti-Christians.

MAJESTIC JUAB COUNTY, HOME OF MT. NEBO

Since the white man first settled this area, there has always been dispute as to who was the first to climb Mt. Nebo. Confirmed rumors is that it was named as such after Mount Nebo in the Middle East country of Jordan, where Moses was able to see a vision of what the world would come to. The first history book of Juab County was written by Alice P. McCune, a woman who I knew well. She wrote the book in 1947, and interviewed many of the still living Mormon Pioneers prior to that. It had been reported that Orson Pratt (a Mormon leader who was later killed by Mormon haters in the South) was the first to climb Mt. Nebo, but according to the books author, she thought that was "highly improbable" and I will stand my her. Then one has to recognize there were various Indian Tribes in the area, and part of the High School year books tell of the folklores of those people that strayed that way. Regardless who is first or last, it seems more important that YOU climb it, regardless of when it is. My mother did it, leading a bunch of women in the Juab Recreation Club of years ago. Although it bout killed me, my brother lead me up there years ago, and even though Hal did it in a pair of cowboy boots, and I in a new expensive pair of hiking boots. That is why it took us three days from Dad & Sons to Nebo, then out through Baileys Barn. Nowadays, Scouts and others do it in one day, and you can hike from either the Mona side or Nephi Loop Side. Over the years the height of the Mountain changes, depending on how much "Nebo Juice" the Engineer or Surveyor is drinking! The first photo of the lady on top was taken by Roy Tolley on July 24, 1985, and at that time, the height was determined to be 12,000 feet. So carry a rock with you and build a tall marker with a good record as it is only a box of papers now.

BRACE YOURSELF AS JUAB COUNTY PROPERTY TAXES ARE A COMIN

Well, as most of you know the County has sent Tax notices out.  You can fight it, just make sure you study all factors and get your ducks in a row.  I have decided to pay what is due on my grandpappy's land. What I don't understand is why Juab no longer will take Postage Stamps as payment or even Personal Checks, unless they are certified. At least we don't have to pay Hog Cholera Tax this year, so they must have cleared that up, and same thing for the Tuberculous problem. On the back it shows a total of $20.6 million is being collected and as usual, the School gets 7.3 million of it. I do feel bad for my grandfather and others who worked hard as they are getting only a half million for the Indigent fund, and the last check he got was called "Old Age" fund, which was $10.00 a month. Oh Well, do what you can to Pay Up......or else....they just may make you to take a Spanish or China Flu shot and the end will be the end of paying taxes. Rumor has it, there are no taxes in Heaven or Hell. That is only an earth thing.

REMEMBER 9-11; THE LIFE OF YOUR FAMILY MAY DEPEND ON IT.

Do you remember the ride of Paul Revere when he shouted "The British are coming" or the "Rough Riders" that local Mat Howard fought in Cuba with Teddy Roosevelt; how about "Remember the Alamo" or "A Day That Will Live in Infamy" or "The War to End Wars" or even the Fall of Saigon in 1975. My guess is that most won't have much of a clue other than what we may have scanned over in a History book. Well today, you ought to plan on at least recalling the many Americans that were killed by enemies of the United States. Those people had different beliefs and hated ours, wanting to invade and destroy us all. Before our own heritage; families and culture is wiped off the face off  the earth, this is a good time to bring your friends, family and yes any enemies to the Nephi City Park on 9-11 and pay respect to those who were brutally murdered by people that are still out to kill us, many of which our country leaders support. Be mindful of the enemy within. They are the real killers. It is time to stop and pay respect to real Americans who died trying to save others, like many others before us did, but soon we forget. Our wars may have just started and of all times, we need real leaders, both in our country and in our own state and locally. Let us come together as one nation in union.
