Juab County has always been rich. Not just in the richness of its people, but the richness in the ground.
I have always been interested in finding, not the gold, but the stories behind the gold, and over the years, have led family treks in search of what we think Montezuma left behind near Kanab; the mystery of the Lost Rhoades mine, and the mother lode of all, the gold of Carre-Shinob. But we don't have to go to far away, as there just may be gold nearby us in Juab County. My mother's side of the family was Harris, and they had a mines in the west Juab County area that needed to be worked a lot. Many people found the mother load in other Juab County areas such as Mammoth, Eureka, and Silver City. The attached shows where some gold may be above Nortonville in the area between Big Birch and Little Birch. It is where my grandfather-Wm. Jones would run his cattle for grazing. While he was up there in the 1890's he was the locator of some precious metal, and told Bill Jones about it, who then filed the "Notice of Location" according to local laws and that of the Utah Territory. In 1890, they didn't have a lot of GPS instruments, but the gold may be found on the south side of Big Birch canyon above the start of the stream. Over to the right is where Bob Steele has his mine. It is uncertain who is the rightful owner of any gold found, but my guess is that the Forest Service who claim it, and the land is within their border.
Very interesting!
