Let's go back to Nephi, in the year 1856, then 1920; 1930's then to the sixties. Your family has medical issues., so which mid-wife or Doctor do you call on.

Think back to Nephi, during 1856 when all of the handcart pioneers hit Nephi. There was a lot of people that needed a Doctor or hospital, but who could help them at that time and through the years to follow. According to the 1947 "History of Juab County" book by Alice P. McCune, it shows the first trained Doctor type was Matthew McCune, who had joined the LDS church in India, and came to Nephi with his family. He had been a wealthy Major in the British Army. During the same time, folks had other "doctor types" known as "mid-wives" and interesting enough, Brigham Young had often set those women apart as a church calling. Two main "mid-wives" during that time have the same last names as various people still in the Nephi area. They were Eliza Chapman Gadd and Gerusha Boswell. It was reported that Gadd helped deliver 2,000 babies, and Boswell had to her credit the delivery of 1,020 babies. Her fee for nine days care for mother and baby was $3.00, but like the true Boswell she was, she often accepted carrots pay. When I read the 1947 The Times News, I thought the Dr. L.T. Booth mentioned was a medical doctor but after research, it was discovered he was a Dentist but one that was held in high praise when he was pulling molars in 1900. Other Doctors through the years show two Dr. Reeses', who were cousins, and they were highly respected and even had the flat up Nephi Canyon "Reeses Flat" named after them as they got in the cattle business too. As a kid, I recall my mother talking of the "best" doctor that ever came to Nephi, which  was Dr. L.C. Warenski, who was in practice in Nephi from 1928 to 1941. But I am sure that most of the patients thought their doctor was the "best". The ones I remember is Dr. Francis Beckstead who practiced for 38 years; Dr. John Steele, who served for more than 30 years, then Dr. A. A. Boston, who graduated from medical school in 1929, and came to Nephi in 1956. From what I understand, Juab County now has excellent medical staff, so we can have a favorite Doctor. Just for a little color, I have scanned a copy of my own Birth Certificate, at least the reverse side, to show the all important footprints and the hefty baby that each of the Jones boys weighed-all over ten pounds each.

  1. Hi, Kent. I'm Sondra and Weston's {favorite} niece Shayla. Uncle Wes showed me your blog today. What a treasure for the people of Nephi! I'd be happy to help you if you ever need anything. I turn my blog into books each year. This would be a wonderful keepsake if you're ever interested in turning this into a book. Keep up the good work!
